MIT Professor Aleksander Mądry testified before the House Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Information Technology, and Government Innovation and urged lawmakers to ask tough questions about how corporations use AI tools. He cautioned against leaving the path of artificial intelligence solely to big tech and called for the government to regulate AI, explaining that it is an important tool to ensure AI aligns with society's goals. Mądry highlighted three overarching points: AI brings enormous benefits but also poses risks, AI tools expose us to interactions that go against our intuition, and too little attention has been paid to problems that will result from the nature of the AI supply chain. Mądry urged Congress to probe AI issues and to be prepared to act, saying that "we are at an inflection point in terms of what future AI will bring."
